Twenty Ten a tourist guide

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 3, 2009, 10:23 AM
It is as it should be

The upcoming Soccer World Cup in South Africa is the motivation behind this short guide to Johannesburg, one of the capital cities of our country...yes I did say "cities", for some weird reason..we are to confused to have one capital..so we decided to have three instead.. That provides for the equitable distribution of government corruption.

DRIVING

In my short stay in Gauteng, I have noticed a distinct difference in the driving behavior of the road users of this Province.

Firstly...you must drive a LARGE vehicle, as the size of the vehicle determines the right of way. You must also drive a BMW as it gives you a certain status. Immaterial of the fact that you driving a 1400 BMW that is falling apart. As long as the head lights work...that is all that matters..as you flash the Cape Town drivers to pull over, so you may pass. In Cape Town..driving is a pleasure..everyone is laid back..traffic jams are rare..and if they do occur, people actually do not find them annoying and can be seen to be singing in cars..nodding to music...or just smiling.

The way the Gauteng driver behaves..is similar to people with a serious drug addiction..their erratic driving was a mystery....until recently...I think I have found the reason...THEY ARE ADDICTED TO DIESEL SMOKE.... How did I come to this conclusion??? Well....

I am driving on this open stretch of road..this fucker comes behind me...in his BMW...flashing his lights...wanting me to pull over...just so he can pass...No concern for the lack of pavement...he expects me to pull over onto the grass...and for one reason only...he WANTS..no HE NEEDS to be behind the slow moving truck in front of me...he needs to sniff the diesel fumes..he needs to inhale pollution..it is his morning kick...and he travels behind the truck for a few minutes..settles his addiction...and races to the next truck..

so if you see our drivers..flashing behind you..please give way...its a habit they trying hard to break....

if this is my normal life.... it is as it should be

Take care

Holy smokes, a Capetonian in Gauteng, that must have been a scary experience. Just a warning to those of you that might land up driving in the beautiful city of Cape Town - some drivers might appear to be awake in their cars but they are actually sleepdriving.

:giggle: You describe it so well.
Some things never change!
My dad had a BMW .. and a good South African BMW drivers attitude. The thing about driving a BMW is you actually don't feel like your going that fast .. so you can't understand why every one else is going so slowly!.
My mum used to get stopped for speeding every time she drove it (which luckily wasn't very often). she's one of those scary 80yr olds that drives a big 4x4 (she does live on a farm .. with dirt roads which justifies it).
